Methodology
25th percentile across dedicated-tier listings only. On-demand and spot are separate tracks — never blended. Composite = 40% H100 + 25% H200 + 20% B200 + 15% A100. Gap rule: price carried forward ≤ 2 cycles flagged stale; excluded after. Coverage rule: a GPU sub-index is marked provisional and excluded from the composite if it has fewer than 5 listings or its provider count changed more than 25% vs the prior cycle; remaining basket weights are re-normalized pro-rata. Coverage floor: the composite is only published when at least 60% of basket weight is present; otherwise sub-indices are shown individually and no composite number is recorded for that cycle. Baseline = June 20, 2026. No data fabricated or backfilled.

Methodology Change Log
v1.4 · August 21, 2026 — Hyperstack H100 SXM ($3.20/hr) was absent from the H100 80GB basket in all cycles through 2026-08-04 due to model-string fragmentation: it was published under a distinct GPU string and could not be matched to the h100-80gb basket entry. Those cycles are left unmodified as published history. Hyperstack entered the basket in the August 21, 2026 cycle under the unified gpuId, bringing the H100 provider count to 10; H100 sub-index: 144.98 → 143.59. Composite continuity is preserved by chain-linking at the transition: chain-link factor 1.005103 (C_old / C_new at transition prices); the published composite is set to the prior cycle's exact stored value (109.83). Prices in this cycle are carried from the authored dataset ( cloud-gpus.ts); no independent re-verification against provider sources was performed this cycle. providerVerifiedAt is null on all 55 records. Lambda is at stale cycle 2 of 2 in both the H200 141GB and B200 192GB baskets and will be excluded from both next cycle unless it reappears.
v1.3 · copy correction · August 19, 2026 — Four display surfaces were carrying AWS p5.48xlarge on-demand pricing at $98.32/hr (the pre-June 2025 rate, retired 14 months ago). AWS cut P5 on-demand 44% effective June 1, 2025; the correct rate is $55.04/hr ($6.88/GPU). The tracked dataset in cloud-gpus.ts was correct throughout — all three snapshot cycles record $6.88/GPU. No index value changed; no snapshot was modified. Corrected surfaces: methodology source note, cheapest-h100-cloud provider card and FAQ, gpu/h100-sxm5 rental card. The 6× spread stat was also corrected to 3× ($6.88 ÷ $2.19).
v1.3 · label correction · August 18, 2026 — The methodology_version field in price-index-snapshots.json was stuck at "1.0" since the index was initialised, while v1.1–v1.3 rules were live and producing data. The MCP get_price_index tool therefore reported methodology v1.0 for all cycles. No index value changed; the stored numbers were computed under v1.3 rules from the first non-baseline cycle. Field corrected to "1.3". Retired the median /api/price-index and /api/v1/index endpoints (410 Gone).
v1.3 · July 28, 2026 — Added provider-count transparency: each sub-index card now shows the current provider count alongside the baseline count; Biggest Movers flags any sub-index whose provider count changed since the prior cycle; editorial note added near composite headline.
v1.2 · July 28, 2026 — Added composite coverage floor: composite is suppressed and sub-indices shown individually when included basket weight is below 60%. Reason: prevent a re-normalized single GPU from being published as a composite.
v1.1 · July 28, 2026 — Added coverage-stability rule: sub-indices with fewer than 5 listings or a provider-set change > 25% cycle-over-cycle are flagged provisional, excluded from the composite, and re-based on stabilization. Composite re-normalized pro-rata across included GPUs. Reason: prevent coverage changes from being reported as price moves.
v1.0 · July 27, 2026 — Index founded on 25th-percentile / CPI-style composite methodology (H100 40%, H200 25%, B200 20%, A100 15%), dedicated-tier only. Supersedes the earlier median price series at this URL. Baseline set to June 20, 2026.
